Translations of these moments inform my practice and the abstract language it employs. My paintings and collages examine the role of the body in our interpretation of constructed spaces. Tactile and non-representational, this work is informed by architectural structures, properties of the body, and my observations of gestural actions and time. I explore this complex dynamics of body/space from the standpoint of perceptual variables such as palette, materiality and scale. My practice is guided by a formal aesthetic that uses minimal and expressive forms to examine varied degrees of physical control. Through systematic and intuitive processes, I analyze the objectivity of painting and constructive possibilities of image-making. I have found that sensorial phenomena are created through the reduction of visual information. This discovery forces me to question the significance of what cannot be seen, but remains present. I investigate the concealment of images in an attempt to define spatial experiences for the viewer and myself. This process of over-painting creates associations between internal systems and the surfaces that contain them. The resulting images use striated forms to obscure the initial layers, revealing energetic, visceral passages. These paintings and collages create non-specific places where modes of looking are as much the content as material, subject or presentation strategy. _______________________________________________________________________________ The collages in the Codex Remodeled Series intervene in the arrangements of found images by altering, subverting and adapting their subjects. Using pages from architectural textbooks and artist catalogues, this body of work dissects historical structures to examine their pictorial and material properties. Through this process, the images are re-purposed to establish a new hierarchy of forms that emerge as proposals for tactile dimensional translations.
